Product Story

Bold colour meets disciplined Swiss design in the Mondaine Doppio.

Inspired by the principles of Bauhaus design, its deep black dial is brought to life by a spectrum of colourful geometric hour markers. Mondaine's distinctive double-line hands continue the graphic theme, while the signature red seconds hand provides a vivid finishing accent.

Look a little closer and the details become even more interesting. The concave dial and double-domed sapphire crystal create a sense of depth, while the circle, square and triangle incorporated into the case-back design reference the fundamental geometric forms associated with Bauhaus.

At 41 mm, the black 316L stainless-steel case has a confident contemporary presence, complemented by a matching Milanese mesh bracelet. Inside, a Swiss Made Ronda quartz movement provides reliable everyday timekeeping.

Graphic, colourful and wonderfully individual, this is Mondaine design with a distinctly playful side.

The Beginning

The Swiss Railway Clock

In 1944, Swiss engineer and designer Hans Hilfiker created the clock that became known as the Official Swiss Railways Clock. Designed for busy railway platforms, its purpose was beautifully simple: the time had to be understood at a glance.

Large black markers, bold hands and an uncluttered white dial created an exceptionally clear piece of industrial design.

Designed for a Purpose

Every element was created to make the time quick and effortless to read.

From Station to Wrist

Mondaine, 1986

In 1986, Mondaine adapted the celebrated Swiss railway-clock design into a wristwatch collection with official approval from the Swiss Federal Railways.

The result preserved the character of Hilfiker's original dial while transforming a familiar piece of public design into something personal and wearable.

Mondaine red seconds hand detail

One Red Hand

The Detail Everyone Remembers

The red seconds hand became the defining visual signature of the Swiss railway clock. Its form was inspired by the signalling paddle used by railway dispatchers.

Against the restrained black-and-white dial, that single flash of red gives Mondaine its unmistakable identity without compromising legibility.

Function became identity.

The Mondaine Design Language

Nothing Without a Reason

01

White Dial

A clean background gives the hands and hour markers maximum visual contrast.

02

Black Markers

Bold geometry makes the time easy to read quickly and from a distance.

03

Red Seconds

The colour accent creates instant recognition while preserving the dial's clarity.

04

Purposeful Form

The design grew from function rather than decoration.

A Railway Tradition

The Famous Pause at Twelve

The original Swiss railway station clocks were synchronised across the rail network. Their red seconds hand completed its sweep before pausing at 12 o'clock while the clock waited for the signal marking the start of the next minute.

Mondaine's stop2go products pay tribute to this memorable behaviour. Not every Mondaine watch uses stop2go technology, so the functions of each model should be checked individually.

The Watch Behind the Design

Case size, movement, crystal, water resistance, strap material and other specifications vary between Mondaine collections and models, so we present those details on each Marcus Tempus product page rather than applying one specification to the whole brand.

Timeless by Design

A Watch That Still Looks Like Mondaine

Mondaine's strength is that its core railway-clock language does not need to chase fashion. Its proportions, contrast and simplicity grew from a practical problem that was solved exceptionally well.

Different collections reinterpret case shape, colour, materials and proportions while retaining the visual cues that make a Mondaine immediately recognisable.
