Our Heritage

From Camden to Barnet

Each chapter has shaped the Marcus Tempus of today: a jewellery and horology house where traditional workshop skills meet a modern, personal approach.

1982–1984

The Beginning

Jeremy Gane began working from his flat before moving to Camden Lock in 1984. The workshop traded as A1 Clock and Watch Workshop from 47a Stairway Studios, Commercial Place, above the sweet shop.

Building a Reputation

The first article about the shop appeared in the Camden New Journal on 29 March 1984. In 1986, the workshop placed its first advert in a national newspaper, appearing in the Financial Times alongside renowned names including Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier.

1990–2000

A New Home & A Family Business

In 1990, the business became Antique & Modern and moved to 266 East Barnet Road. Mark joined as a watchmaker in 1993, followed by Vanessa six months later. In 2000, Mark and Vanessa bought the business from Jeremy Gane.

Authorised Expertise & Church Hill Road

In 2015, the workshop became an authorised Omega Service Centre, followed by TAG Heuer a few years later. In November 2019, the business moved to its present home at 27 Church Hill Road.

2024–Today

Marcus Tempus

Following Vanessa’s passing in April 2024, the next chapter began with care and respect for everything she helped build.

In 2025, the shop floor began a new transformation and the name evolved to Marcus Tempus Antique & Modern. Inspired by Mark’s childhood nickname, “Mark Time”, the name reflects our love of antique clocks, modern watches, timeless jewellery and exceptional gemstones.

We continue to improve our workshops, expand our collections and grow online while remaining the friendly independent high-street shop our customers know.

A New Chapter

The House of Gemstones

While our foundations have always been built on exceptional watchmaking, clock restoration and jewellery craftsmanship, the story of Marcus Tempus continues to evolve.

Today, we are proudly building The House of Gemstones: a carefully curated collection celebrating the beauty, rarity and individuality of natural coloured gemstones.

From vivid rubies and emeralds to exceptional sapphires, tourmalines and many other remarkable gemstones, every piece is chosen with the same attention to detail that has guided our workshops for over four decades. We believe every gemstone has its own story, formed over millions of years before finding its way into a piece of jewellery that can be treasured for generations.

Our passion for coloured gemstones is a natural extension of everything Marcus Tempus has always stood for: craftsmanship, authenticity and creating lasting heirlooms.

Where every gemstone begins its next chapter.

Whether restoring a treasured heirloom or helping someone discover a meaningful new piece, we believe every object has a story worth preserving.
