Product Story

A wonderfully detailed 8-day Black Forest musical cuckoo clock, bringing together traditional chalet styling, mechanical timekeeping and a charming animated woodland scene.

The richly detailed wooden chalet is surrounded by fir trees, animals and miniature figures, with hand-painted decoration adding touches of colour throughout. Above the dial, traditional dancing figures form part of the musical display, while the scene below depicts two woodcutters working at a saw mill.

What makes this clock particularly charming is its moving saw mill, which brings the woodland scene to life when the clock performs. The traditional cuckoo, music and automata turn this substantial clock into far more than a timekeeper — it becomes a piece of mechanical theatre.

Powered by an 8-day mechanical movement, the clock requires winding approximately once a week and also incorporates an automatic night shut-off.

Why We Love It

It has everything we want from a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock without becoming overwhelmingly large. The little working saw mill is the star for us — combined with the dancers, cuckoo and music, there is genuine movement and character throughout the clock. The 8-day movement and automatic night shut-off make it considerably easier to live with, too.

Why We Treasure the Cuckoo Clock

Few clocks have as much personality as a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock. Timekeeping, carving, sound and movement come together in an object designed not simply to tell the time, but to become part of the home.

HEKAS has handmade cuckoo clocks in Schonach since 1938, continuing a clockmaking tradition rooted in Germany's Black Forest.

Ownership & Care

Caring for Your Cuckoo Clock

Keep the clock dry and away from strong heat, damp and prolonged direct sunlight. Dust carved surfaces gently and never apply household oil to the movement.

Before moving the clock, remove the weights and pendulum and secure the chains. If you are unsure, ask a clockmaker before transporting it.
Heritage & Origin

From the Black Forest

Clockmaking developed into an important Black Forest craft centuries ago. HEKAS traces its own cuckoo clock production in Schonach to 1938. Today the company produces its clocks in the Black Forest, from traditional souvenir designs to highly detailed mechanical pieces.

01

Schonach

A historic centre of Black Forest cuckoo clockmaking and the home of HEKAS.

02

Mechanical Tradition

Weights provide the power while a pendulum regulates the rate of the clock.

03

Sound & Movement

The familiar call is created mechanically, while selected clocks add music and animated scenes.

04

Made to Be Kept

A mechanical clock can be maintained and serviced, allowing it to remain part of a home for generations.

Genuine Black Forest Clock

The VdS Seal

HEKAS states that its genuine Black Forest cuckoo clocks carry the seal of the Black Forest Clock Association (VdS), guaranteeing Black Forest origin, quality and a traditional mechanical movement.

Inside the Clock

Anatomy of a Cuckoo Clock

The Movement

The mechanical heart of the clock, controlling timekeeping and the strike sequence.

The Bellows

The Weights

Provide the gravitational power that drives the clock and its complications.

The Pendulum

Regulates the rate at which the clock runs.

The Gong

Adds resonance and punctuation to the cuckoo call on traditional designs.

The Automata

On selected models, dancers, waterwheels and other figures bring the clock to life.

Cuckoo Clock Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I wind it?

A 1-day clock is raised approximately daily; an 8-day movement has a much longer running period.

Why has my clock stopped?

Check that the weights and chains are free, the pendulum can swing and the clock is hanging securely. Avoid forcing anything.

How do I adjust timekeeping?

Small rate adjustments are normally made at the pendulum. Follow the instructions for your model or ask our workshop.

Can I silence it at night?

Many models provide a manual or automatic night shut-off, depending on the individual clock.

Can I move the hands backwards?

Do not force the hands or mechanism. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular model.

How should I transport it?

Remove the weights and pendulum and secure the chains before moving the clock.
